Parenting, Mentoring and Substance Abuse (PMSA) is a collaboration between YMCA
YFS and the San Diego County Probation Department. The mission of the
program is to support, empower and
encourage participants to become healthy, productive members of the community
through comprehensive intervention and education services. This
is achieved through a commitment to parenting classes, individualized
mentoring and managing substance abuse recovery. All three components of
the PMSA Program are available countywide to youth on Juvenile Probation.
Six Mentors work individually with participants for six months. The
objective of this portion of the program is to encourage academic success
through the improvement of school attendance and grades. McAlister
Institute is the subcontractor for the Substance Abuse component which
includes eight Juvenile Recovery Specialists (JRS) who carry a maximum of
25 cases at a time and assist with drug intervention for program
participants. The JRS staff promote sobriety through individualized drug
treatment plans, informal counseling and continual monitoring of substance
abuse issues. The Parenting component is contracted through the San Diego
Community College District. Classes are held at YMCA sites in five
different regions throughout the county. The goal of parenting training is
to help the parents of Juvenile Court wards develop the skills necessary to
guide their children towards positive goal achievement. Participants are
not necessarily involved in all three components of the program. Referrals
come via the Juvenile Court then the youth and some parents are either
mandated or recommended to participate in the appropriate portion(s) of the
Program. For more information please call 619.543.9850 ext. 123
Even Start
Family Literacy Program is based out of Washington Elementary
School in Little Italy. The purpose of the program is to help
break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational
opportunities of families. This is accomplished by integrating early
childhood education, adult basic education, Parent/Child Interactive
Literacy Activities, and parenting education into a unified program.
The Early Childhood Education component promotes young children’s
growth and development, engages parents in their children’s
educational process by fostering meaningful involvement, and relates the
significance of parents’ roles in their children’s language and
literacy development. Parenting Education consists of training for
parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and full
partners in the education of their children. The Parent/Child
Interactive Literacy Activity component encourages parents and children to
interact together as a family unit and provides a blueprint to facilitate
meaningful interactions that lead to children’s growth and
development. Adult Basic Education is designed to extend the basic
education skills of the adult in the context of goals set by the individual
and the family and consists of an ESL program, GED preparation, high school
diploma preparation, life skills, and computer classes. For more
information call 619.543.9850 ext. 126.
Reflections is an intensive, family focused program which strives to
provide treatment and accountability to wards of the Juvenile Court with
the desired outcome of reducing delinquency (specifically drug and gang).
Probation is the lead agency for this program which is tailored to the
individual needs and strengths of each family. Upon referral to the program
from the Juvenile Court, a multi-disciplinary team including: mental health
therapists, social workers, parents, support workers, teachers, probation
officers, and others, design an individualized case plan for the family.
Once the minor achieves the milestones specified in the case plan they are
eligible for graduation from the program. For more information call
