A project of YMCA
Youth & Family Services
Independent
Living Services
Independent Living Skills (ILS) program equips youth with
specific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions concerning money, jobs,
housing, health, nutrition, relationships and other life skills. We serve
youth between the ages of 16 - 21 who are currently or were in the foster
care or probation systems. We are a county-funded skill-building program
designed to prepare youth for independent living. We provide services in
two formats: case management and education. The ILS program is funded
by the County
of San Diego's Health
& Human Services agency.
Turning Point Transitional
Living Program is an 18-month program designed to assist and support
young adults (16-21) through various stages of personal, professional and
academic growth. The program's goal is to help young adults develop
the skills necessary to live self-sufficient, independent lives.
The program offers shared apartment living in the City Heights
area of San Diego.
Support services include individualized case management, employment
development/assistance and independent living skills training.
Participants
pay based on their monthly income and are encouraged to save a minimum of
20% of their total earnings. The majority of participants are also
enrolled in an academic program of their choice.
Tommie’s Place is a special program of Turning
Point that is dedicated to parenting and/or pregnant youth. In addition to the standard services,
they also receive parenting and child development classes.
Mary's House is an 18-month transitional
living program is designed to meet the needs of at-risk and former female
foster youth who have recently transitioned out of San Diego's Foster Care System. The goal
of Mary's House is to provide these at-risk women safe shelter, life skills
training, support and the advocacy they need to successfully transition
into a self-sufficient and independent life. It's location on 8 acres of
land in Escondido
provides the youth women with solitude and safety, balanced by job
opportunities and services that they need to be successful.
